Shao Yao Tang (Peony Decoction)

Shao Yao Tang (芍藥湯) clears damp-heat from the Intestines and regulates the qi and blood; for damp-heat dysentery with both blood and pus in the stool and tenesmus.

Ingredients

Actions & Functions

  • Clears damp-heat and resolves toxicity
  • Regulates the qi and blood; relieves tenesmus

Indications

Damp-heat dysentery: abdominal pain, tenesmus, and diarrhoea with blood and pus, with a burning sensation of the anus.

Tongue & Pulse

Tongue: greasy yellow coat. Pulse: rapid.

Modifications

With more blood, add Di Yu; with more heat, increase Huang Lian.

Cautions & Contraindications

For damp-heat dysentery; not for cold or deficiency diarrhoea.
