Actions & Functions

  • Moistens the Intestines and drains heat; gently unblocks the bowels

Indications

Constipation with dry, hard stools and frequent urination, from intestinal dryness/heat, often in the elderly or postpartum.

Tongue & Pulse

Tongue: dry yellow coat. Pulse: submerged and rapid (or excess).

Modifications

With marked blood deficiency, add Dang Gui and Sheng Di.

Cautions & Contraindications

Use with caution in pregnancy and in constipation purely from deficiency.
