Dao Tan Tang (導痰湯) is Er Chen Tang with added qi-moving and phlegm-breaking herbs; it dries damp and transforms stubborn phlegm while moving qi, for thick phlegm-damp obstruction.

Ingredients

  • Dries damp and transforms stubborn phlegm
  • Promotes the movement of qi and disperses fullness

Indications

Stubborn phlegm-damp: cough with copious thick sputum, a stifling chest, dizziness, nausea, and a sensation of focal distension.

Tongue & Pulse

Tongue: white greasy coat. Pulse: slippery.

Modifications

Add Ren Shen and Shi Chang Pu (Di Tan Tang) for phlegm clouding the mind with wind-stroke.

Cautions & Contraindications

Drying; not for phlegm from yin deficiency or dry cough.
