Tian Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Praeparatum)

Tian Nan Xing (天南星), the prepared rhizome of Arisaema, dries dampness and transforms stubborn phlegm and, in particular, dispels wind-phlegm to stop spasm, tremor and convulsion; applied topically it reduces swelling.

Indications

Stubborn phlegm cough; wind-phlegm with dizziness, numbness, facial paralysis, seizures and tetany; and (topically) swellings and sores.

Dosage

3-9 g in decoction (prepared only).

Common Combinations

With Ban Xia for stubborn phlegm; with Tian Ma for wind-phlegm dizziness.

Cautions & Contraindications

Raw form is toxic - use only prepared. Contraindicated in pregnancy and in dry/deficiency phlegm.
