ST-9 Renying

Renying (ST-9), “Man’s Welcome”, beside the larynx, regulates qi and blood, descends rebellious qi and benefits the throat; a key point for hypertension and goitre.

Location

On the neck, level with the laryngeal prominence, on the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, where the carotid artery pulsates.

Anatomy

On the anterior border of sternocleidomastoid, on the carotid sheath; the superior thyroid artery and, deep, the common carotid artery; the cutaneous cervical nerve, cervical branch of the facial nerve and, deep, the sympathetic trunk and vagus nerve.

Actions & Functions

  • Regulates qi and blood and descends rebellious qi
  • Benefits the throat and dissipates nodules (goitre)
  • Regulates blood pressure

Indications

Hypertension, goitre and scrofula, sore throat, asthma and fullness of the chest, and dizziness.

Needling

0.3-0.5 cun, perpendicular insertion on the medial side of the carotid artery, avoiding the vessel.

Moxibustion Suitability

Moxibustion is contraindicated.

Point Combinations

With LI-11 and ST-36 for hypertension; with CV-22 for goitre.

Cautions & Contraindications

The common carotid artery lies at the point; palpate carefully, separate the artery, and needle with great care. Do not needle bilaterally with strong stimulation.
