San Qi (Notoginseng Radix)

San Qi (三七), the root of Panax notoginseng (Tian Qi), is the foremost herb for stopping bleeding without causing stasis, and it simultaneously invigorates the blood, dispels stasis and relieves pain and swelling; a key herb for trauma.

Indications

Bleeding of all kinds (coughing or vomiting of blood, blood in stool/urine, trauma); and traumatic injury with pain, swelling and bruising.

Dosage

3-9 g in decoction, or 1-3 g as powder (powder is preferred).

Common Combinations

Often used alone as powder for bleeding and trauma; a key ingredient of Yunnan Bai Yao.

Cautions & Contraindications

Use with caution in pregnancy and in blood deficiency without stasis.
