Da Zao (大棗), the fruit of Ziziphus jujuba (Chinese date), tonifies the Spleen qi, nourishes the blood, calms the spirit and moderates and harmonises the actions of other herbs.

Indications

Spleen deficiency with fatigue and poor appetite; blood deficiency; restlessness and emotional lability (e.g. in ‘restless organ disorder’); and to protect the Stomach from harsh herbs.

Dosage

3-12 pieces (or 10-30 g) in decoction.

Common Combinations

Commonly paired with Sheng Jiang to harmonise the nutritive and defensive qi and protect the Stomach.

Cautions & Contraindications

Avoid in damp, fullness, phlegm and parasites; its cloying nature can worsen these.
