Si Jun Zi Tang (四君子湯), ‘Four Gentlemen Decoction’, is the foundational qi tonic. It tonifies the qi and strengthens the Spleen and Stomach, and is the basis of many qi-tonifying formulas.

Indications
Spleen and Stomach qi deficiency: a pale complexion, low and weak voice, reduced appetite, loose stools and fatigue of the limbs.
Tongue & Pulse
Tongue: pale with a thin white coat. Pulse: thin and weak (or weak and frail).
Modifications
Add Chen Pi (Yi Gong San) for qi stagnation; add Chen Pi and Ban Xia (Liu Jun Zi Tang) for qi deficiency with damp-phlegm.
Cautions & Contraindications
Use with caution in yin deficiency with heat.
