What to Wear to Your Acupuncture Session

One of the most common questions before a first acupuncture appointment is simply: what should I wear? The short answer is loose, comfortable clothing – but a little understanding of why makes it easy to come prepared and get the most from your treatment.

Why loose clothing helps

Many of the most useful acupuncture points lie on the lower legs (below the knee), the forearms and hands, the abdomen and the lower back. Loose clothing lets your practitioner reach these areas easily without you having to undress, and lets them roll sleeves and trouser legs up comfortably. Tight jeans, fitted sleeves and restrictive waistbands make this harder.

What to wear

  • Loose trousers or a skirt that can be rolled up above the knee, or shorts.
  • A loose top with sleeves that push up easily, or a short-sleeved top.
  • Layers, so you can stay comfortably warm – you may be resting still for twenty to thirty minutes.
  • Comfortable, easy-to-remove footwear, as points on the feet and lower legs are often used.

What to avoid

Skinny jeans, tight long-sleeved tops, all-in-one outfits, and very restrictive clothing can all limit access to points. Heavy make-up is best avoided if you are having facial (cosmetic) acupuncture.

Will I need to undress?

Usually not. For most treatments, rolling up sleeves and trouser legs is enough. If points on the back, abdomen or hips are needed, your practitioner will ask you to loosen or remove a layer and will provide a gown or towels for modesty and warmth. You should never feel exposed – tell your practitioner if you are uncomfortable.

A few other tips

  • Have a light meal beforehand – it is best not to be either very hungry or very full.
  • Avoid alcohol before treatment, and go easy on caffeine.
  • Arrive in good time so you are relaxed rather than rushed.
  • Afterwards, take it gently, keep warm and drink water; many people feel pleasantly relaxed.

In short: wear whatever lets you relax and lets your practitioner reach your arms, lower legs and abdomen easily. Comfort is the priority.
