This is the principal local point for the shoulder, used for pain, motor impairment and wind disorders of the shoulder and arm.

Large Intestine 15 (LI 15) Jian Yu 肩髃 — Shoulder Bone

Location

On the shoulder, in the depression anterior and inferior to the acromion, between the anterior and middle fibres of the deltoid, formed when the arm is abducted.

Anatomy

The deltoid muscle; the posterior circumflex humeral artery; the lateral supraclavicular nerve and the axillary nerve.

Actions & Functions

  • Activates the channel and benefits the shoulder and sinews
  • Dispels wind and damp
  • Dissipates phlegm nodules

Indications

Pain, motor impairment and painful obstruction of the shoulder and arm, hemiplegia, wind-rash and urticaria, and scrofula.

Needling

0.8-1.5 cun, perpendicular or oblique insertion towards the elbow.

Moxibustion Suitability

Suitable for moxibustion.

Point Combinations

With LI-11 and SJ-14 for shoulder pain; with LI-4 for urticaria.
