Shi Zao Tang (十棗湯) drives out congested water and thin mucus from the chest and abdomen; for excess fluid accumulation such as pleural effusion or ascites in a robust patient.

Ingredients

  • Gan Sui, Da Ji (Jing Da Ji), Yuan Hua (harsh water-expellers, as powder)
  • taken with a decoction of ten Da Zao (jujube) to protect the Stomach

Actions & Functions

  • Drives out congested water and thin fluids (thoracic and abdominal)

Indications

Excess water/fluid accumulation: fluid in the chest (pleural) with cough and pain on breathing, or abdominal water (ascites) with fullness and hard distension, in a robust person.

Tongue & Pulse

Tongue: white slippery coat. Pulse: deep, wiry and forceful.

Modifications

The toxic herbs are taken as powder with the jujube decoction, in the early morning, in a carefully controlled dose.

Cautions & Contraindications

Harsh and toxic - contraindicated in pregnancy and in the weak; expert supervision only; the three herbs are classically incompatible with Gan Cao.
