Tao Hong Si Wu Tang (桃紅四物湯) is Si Wu Tang with Tao Ren and Hong Hua added; it nourishes the blood while invigorating it and dispelling stasis, for blood deficiency combined with blood stasis (a mainstay in gynaecology).

Ingredients

Actions & Functions

  • Nourishes the blood
  • Invigorates the blood and dispels stasis; regulates menstruation

Indications

Blood deficiency with blood stasis: early or heavy periods with dark, clotted blood, dysmenorrhoea, and abdominal pain, with signs of blood deficiency.

Tongue & Pulse

Tongue: dark or with stasis spots. Pulse: thin and choppy (or wiry).

Modifications

Use Chi Shao in place of Bai Shao for more blood-moving.

Cautions & Contraindications

Use with caution in pregnancy and in heavy bleeding without stasis.
