Conception Vessel 17 (REN 17) Shan Zhong — Chest Centre

This point, (also Danzhong), is the Front-Mu (alarm) point of the Pericardium and the Influential (Hui-meeting) point of qi. It is the principal point for the chest and the gathering qi (zong qi), regulating and descending qi, unbinding the chest and benefiting the breast.

Location

On the chest, on the anterior midline, at the level of the fourth intercostal space, midway between the nipples.

Anatomy

On the sternum; the perforating branches of the internal mammary artery; the anterior cutaneous branch of the fourth intercostal nerve.

  • Regulates and descends qi (Influential point of qi)
  • Unbinds the chest and relieves cough and asthma
  • Benefits the breast and promotes lactation
  • Calms the spirit and benefits the Heart

Indications

Asthma, cough and shortness of breath, fullness and pain of the chest, palpitations, insufficient lactation and mastitis, and hiccup and difficulty swallowing.

Needling

0.3-0.5 cun, transverse insertion.

Moxibustion Suitability

Suitable for moxibustion.

Point Combinations

With LU-7 and LU-1 for asthma; with SI-1 and ST-18 for lactation; with PC-6 for the chest.
