San Jiao 5 (SJ 5) Wai Guan — Outer Pass

This is the Luo-Connecting point of the Triple Burner channel and the Confluent point of the Yang Wei Mai. It releases the exterior, expels wind-heat and benefits the head, ears and lateral aspects of the body.

San Jiao 5 (SJ 5) Wai Guan 外關 — Outer Pass

Location

On the dorsal aspect of the forearm, 2 cun proximal to the dorsal wrist crease, between the radius and ulna, on the radial side of the extensor digitorum tendon.

Anatomy

Between the radius and ulna, on the extensor muscles; the posterior and anterior interosseous arteries; the posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve and the posterior interosseous nerve.

  • Clears heat from the lateral body and limbs

Indications

Common cold and febrile disease, headache, red and painful eyes, tinnitus and deafness, pain and stiffness of the neck and shoulder, and pain of the elbow, wrist and fingers.

Needling

0.5-1.0 cun, perpendicular insertion.

Moxibustion Suitability

Suitable for moxibustion.

Point Combinations

With GB-41 (its paired Confluent point) for the Yang Wei and Dai Mai, ears and temporal region; with LI-4 for wind-heat and exterior conditions.
