Sheng Di Huang (生地黃), the fresh/dried (unprocessed) root of Rehmannia, clears heat and cools the blood, nourishes yin and generates fluids; a principal herb for heat in the blood and yin damage from febrile disease.

Indications

Heat in the blood with bleeding (nosebleed, blood in stool/urine) and rashes; febrile disease damaging the yin with thirst and a scarlet tongue; and yin deficiency with night sweats and constipation.

Dosage

9-30 g in decoction.

Common Combinations

With Xuan Shen and Mu Dan Pi to cool the blood; a chief herb of Qing Ying Tang.

Cautions & Contraindications

Cold and cloying; avoid in Spleen deficiency with damp, poor appetite and loose stools.
