Ma Huang Tang (麻黃湯), ‘Ephedra Decoction’, strongly induces sweating to release exterior wind-cold of the excess type (no sweating), and diffuses Lung qi to calm wheezing.

Ingredients

  • Ma Huang (ephedra) 9g – chief
  • Gui Zhi (cinnamon twig) 6g – deputy
  • Xing Ren (apricot kernel) 9g – assistant
  • Zhi Gan Cao (honey-fried licorice) 3g – envoy

Actions & Functions

  • Induces sweating and releases exterior wind-cold (excess)
  • Diffuses Lung qi and calms wheezing

Indications

Exterior wind-cold excess: chills and fever with no sweating, headache and generalised body aches, and wheezing.

Tongue & Pulse

Tongue: thin, white coat. Pulse: floating and tight.

Modifications

With interior heat and irritability, add Shi Gao (Da Qing Long Tang). For milder cases, reduce the dose of Ma Huang.

Cautions & Contraindications

A strong diaphoretic - contraindicated in exterior deficiency with sweating, in qi or yin deficiency, and in those with hypertension. Use briefly and stop once sweating is achieved.
