Acupuncture May Improve Cognitive Function in Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment, Meta-Analysis Finds

Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment are progressive conditions characterised by worsening memory and thinking ability. Conventional Western medicine can only partially alleviate symptoms, prompting interest in complementary approaches such as acupuncture. However, individual studies on acupuncture for these conditions have produced inconsistent findings, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions.

To address this, researchers conducted a meta-analysis drawing on literature from six databases. They identified 52 randomised controlled trials involving 3,362 patients diagnosed with either Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment, and used specialised software to pool and analyse the results.

The analysis found that acupuncture alone performed significantly better than placebo or no treatment in improving overall cognitive function. Acupuncture alone also outperformed Western medicine alone, and the combination of acupuncture with Western medicine produced even larger improvements than Western medicine on its own. A further moderator analysis suggested that people with Alzheimer’s disease benefited more from combined treatment than those with mild cognitive impairment. Importantly, manual acupuncture and electroacupuncture produced similar results, with both approaches outperforming Western medicine alone.

The authors caution that the included studies varied considerably in quality and methodology, meaning these findings should be interpreted carefully.

Conclusion: This meta-analysis provides cautiously optimistic evidence that acupuncture, whether used alone or alongside Western medicine, may meaningfully support cognitive function in people with Alzheimer’s disease or mild cognitive impairment, though higher-quality research is still needed.
