ST-36 Zusanli

Zusanli (ST-36), “Leg Three Li”, is the He-Sea point of the Stomach channel and arguably the most important point for tonifying qi and blood, strengthening the body and supporting immunity.

Location

On the anterior aspect of the lower leg, 3 cun below ST-35, one finger-breadth (middle finger) lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia, on the tibialis anterior muscle.

Anatomy

Tibialis anterior muscle; the anterior tibial artery and vein; the lateral sural cutaneous nerve and the deep peroneal nerve.

Actions & Functions

  • Tonifies qi and blood and strengthens the Spleen and Stomach
  • Harmonises the middle burner and raises yang
  • Clears and resolves dampness
  • Regulates defensive and nourishing qi; supports immunity
  • Calms the mind

Indications

Digestive disorders (abdominal pain and distension, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation), fatigue and general debility, poor appetite, immune weakness, knee and leg pain, dizziness, and mental-emotional disorders.

Needling

0.5-1.5 cun, perpendicular insertion.

Moxibustion Suitability

Highly suitable - one of the principal points for moxibustion. Regular moxa on ST-36 is classically used to promote longevity, strengthen immunity and tonify qi and blood. Direct or indirect moxa may be used.

Point Combinations

With SP-6 to tonify qi and blood; with LI-4 for immunity; with CV-12 for Stomach disorders; with ST-25 for the intestines.
