Ermen (SJ-21), “Ear Gate”, in front of the ear, is a principal local point for tinnitus, deafness and ear disorders.

Location

On the face, in the depression anterior to the supratragic notch and posterior to the condyle of the mandible, found with the mouth open (superior to SI-19).

Anatomy

Anterior to the ear; the superficial temporal artery and vein; the auriculotemporal and facial nerves.

Indications

Tinnitus and deafness, otitis and ear discharge, and toothache.

Needling

0.5-1.0 cun, perpendicular insertion with the mouth open.

Moxibustion Suitability

Moxibustion is generally not used on the face.

Point Combinations

With SI-19 and GB-2 for ear disorders (often needled together with the mouth open).
