Bladder 43 (BL 43) Gao Huang Shu — Vital Region Shu

This is a classic point for chronic and severe deficiency. It tonifies the Lung and Kidney, nourishes deficiency and supports the body in consumptive and exhausting conditions.

Bladder 43 (BL 43) Gao Huang Shu 膏肓俞 — Vital Region Shu

Location

On the upper back, 3 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the fourth thoracic vertebra (T4), level with BL-14.

Anatomy

On the trapezius, rhomboid and, deeper, the erector spinae; the posterior intercostal artery; the dorsal rami of the thoracic nerves.

Actions & Functions

  • Tonifies the Lung and Kidney and nourishes deficiency
  • Strengthens the body in chronic, consumptive conditions
  • Supports the original qi (classically moxa’d extensively)

Indications

Chronic cough and asthma, consumption, night sweats, seminal emission, poor memory, and general weakness and exhaustion.

Needling

0.5-0.7 cun, oblique insertion towards the spine.

Moxibustion Suitability

Highly suitable - classically the focus of extensive moxibustion to treat deep deficiency.

Point Combinations

With BL-13 and BL-23 for chronic deficiency; with REN-4 and moxa for exhaustion.
