Large Intestine 17 (LI 17) Tian Ding 天鼎 — Heaven’s Tripod

Location

On the lateral neck, posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, level with the cricoid cartilage, inferior to LI-18.

Anatomy

Posterior border of sternocleidomastoid; the external jugular vein and the ascending cervical artery; the cutaneous cervical nerve and the phrenic nerve.

Indications

Sudden loss of voice, sore throat, scrofula and goitre, and difficulty swallowing.

Needling

0.3-0.5 cun, perpendicular insertion.

Moxibustion Suitability

Suitable for moxibustion.

With LI-18 for throat and voice disorders; with REN-22 for goitre.

Classical Text References

Cautions & Contraindications

Avoid the external jugular vein; needle shallowly.
